The Finger Lakes Regional event took place March 9th - March 11th 2006. at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Here is a letter from our yahoo groups describing the event.
Team 578!!!
What a "wild and crazy" weekend! Our first FIRST Regional Competition of
the year was FANTASTIC!!!
This team accomplished so much this weekend it's difficult to list
everything but I will try:
- KG3 performed exceptionally well under some pretty stiff
competition!
- The Pit Crew was awesome! They kept KG3 running smoothly and
flawlessly all day long! (Especially keeping those batteries charged!!)
- The Drive Team was remarkable with their precision driving and
shooting !!
- The Team worked well with their Alliance partners in developing
strategies that resulted in our placing 5th in the Qualifying Rounds!
You were flexible enough and open minded enough to realize a change in
strategy was warranted during the competition!! This really shows
maturity and resourcefulness!
- The Spirit Team was amazing!! Pom Poms, Blue Lights, Mascots,
Capes, head gear, a gazillion buttons, 5-7-8 signs, face painting, Aim
High Bracelets, T-Shirts, Hoodies, and tons of Team Spirit!!
- The Chairman's Award representatives did a great job
representing Team 578 in their interview! Attached is a review of our
submission from the committee. I believe you guys did an outstanding
job!
- The Team submitted a Chairman's Award, A Website Award, a Woodie
Flowers Award and an Animation Award. Submitting all these awards this
year was a first for Team 578 and an incredible accomplishment!
- Team 578 received the "Best Cart Award" from the X-Cats! It's
truly an honor to be recognized by your peers for your hard work!
- And how about the General Motors Industrial Design Award! "This
award celebrates form and function in an efficiently designed machine
that effectively achieves the game challenge." A true testament to the
ingenuity and collaborative effort of the whole team in designing a
tough little robot that not only could score 3 pointers but could stand
on it's own in the heat of competition and prevent other robots from
scoring!!! Remember that our goal early in the design faze was to build
a robot that was simple but robust in design and function. FIRST
recognized your efforts by awarding you the GM Industrial Design Award.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
- A special congratulations to Frank Pandina for his Finger Lakes
Regional FIRST Competition Volunteer Award. We all new Frank was "the
man" and it was great to see him recognized for his hard work and
dedication to FIRST! You Go Frank!!!
- What a wonderful, exhilarating, exciting and exhausting
competition this was! Everyone on the team:Students, mentors and parents
alike should be very proud of our accomplishments! We have a little work
to do getting the cart up to speed, a debrief meeting and preparation
for Boston! But let that wait a day! Take today to relax and reflect and
just enjoy the feeling of some great accomplishments and dream about
Bigger and Better things to come in Boston!
GO BLUE LIGHTNING!!!

Team Picture
Of course we took a picture at the Ffinger Lakes Regional of the team. The usual camera quotes were mentioned... "Get closer together", "Hey you -look at the camera, not the ceiling", "Say cheese" , "Let me take another picture, now another picture, wait one more".
Well this is it....
